application process

Learn how to apply for the IBEW Local 400 Apprenticeship program in Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

Basic Requirements (2027-2028 Apprenticeship Program)

Application Period: January 1, 2026 through December 31, 2026
Applicants must meet all of the following requirements at the time of application:

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Age: Must be at least 18 years old at time of application
  • License: Must possess a valid New Jersey Driver’s License
  • Residency: Must reside in Monmouth or Ocean County
    • Address on driver’s license must match mailing address. P.O. Boxes are not accepted.

Education:

Applicants must be a high school graduate or possess a GED, Associate Degree, or higher. Applicants must have successfully completed one full year of high school Algebra or an equivalent post–high school Algebra course with a minimum grade of 75%. CLEP testing will not be accepted.

Applicants who do not meet the Algebra requirement may satisfy this requirement by successfully completing the TECH Math course through www.skillsprep.org. Applicants choosing this option must upload a copy of the TECH Math completion certificate with their application at the time of submission.

Aptitude Test

Applicants must receive a qualifying score on the aptitude test. The aptitude test is not administered on the same day the application is completed. Once an application has been processed, applicants will be notified by email of the date, time, and location of the test. Applicants who do not receive a qualifying score and wish to retake the aptitude test must reapply during the next application period.

The aptitude test is administered at IBEW Local Union 400, located at 3301 State Highway 138, Wall, NJ 07719.

Physical Condition:

Applicants must be physically capable of performing the rigorous work of the electrical trade. If selected, they will be required to complete a substance-abuse screening, a physical examination, and a background check.

Items Required at Time of Application

You must bring all of the following when applying in person:

  1. Headshot-style photograph of the applicant
  2. Copy of birth certificate
  3. DD-214 (required for military veterans only)
  4. Copy of current New Jersey Driver’s License
  5. $100.00 non-refundable application fee

Official Transcripts

Applicants must have official high school and college transcripts (if applicable), showing courses completed and grades earned, sent before the application deadline. Transcripts are considered official only when sent directly from the issuing school and will not be accepted if submitted by the applicant.

Applicants are encouraged to request transcripts from their high school and college at least one month before the application deadline.

Important Notice

Applicants must meet all eligibility requirements and submit all required information and documentation no later than 30 days from the start of the application to proceed with the application process. Transcripts must be received by the JATC no later than 30 days after the application submission date. Failure to comply will result in disqualification from the application process.
