How do I apply for an Apprenticeship?

Applications are completed online only on the first Thursday of March and November, between 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. The application link will be available on our website: www.ibew400.org.

What are the directions to the training academy?

IBEW Local Union 400, 3301 Route 138, Wall, NJ 07719. Located immediately off the New Jersey State Parkway exit 98. Behind the building, rear parking lot, side door “Meeting Room,” downstairs.

I know I had algebra in high school, but it’s not stated on my transcripts?

In this case, we need a letter with a course syllabus from your high school guidance office. The letter must state that the course you took had a component equal to one year of high school algebra. (Applicant must have completed one full year of high school algebra or equivalent post high school algebra course with a 75% minimum grade.)

I had algebra in college but not in high school. Is this acceptable?

Yes, but you must present your college transcripts to document this claim.

I have a college degree in engineering. Am I required to present my high school and/or college transcripts?

Yes, both are required.

If accepted into one of your apprenticeship programs, what is the starting pay and what benefits do you offer?

The starting rate for a first-year commercial apprentice is $17.31* per hour (total package $31.09*) 2026.

The starting rate for a first-year telecommunications apprentice is $19.25 per hour. Some of the benefits include: health insurance, good pensions, higher wages, job security, overtime pay, job safety, family and medical leave, and more.

If I fail the aptitude test, can I re-take it?

Applicants who do not receive a qualifying score and wish to retake the aptitude test must reapply on the next application date available.

If I took the aptitude test at another IBEW Local Union will the results be accepted at Local 400?

Yes, but you must have the training office forward the results to Local 400’s Training Director.

Once I have been accepted as an applicant, how long is the training program?

The Electrical and Telecommunications programs are both 5-year programs.

If I have a high school GED, am I still required to present my high school transcripts?

Yes, transcripts are required to confirm you passed at least one year of algebra with a 75% or better, and also to collect other important data. If you attended college or a university, those transcripts should be submitted with your application as well.

If accepted to the apprenticeship program, do I need to join the union?

Yes.

Why do I need a driver’s license?

Because you will be required to attend work on different jobsites throughout Monmouth and Ocean County, as well as attend school and other events.

How long from the application date does it take to complete the application process including testing and interview?

The timeline varies based on the number of applicants and available job opportunities. The application period is from January 1st to December 31st. After submitting your application, you will typically be scheduled for an aptitude test within one month. Applicants who pass the aptitude test qualify to interview in the spring, with selections usually made by June or July. All applicants are notified of their status.

It is my understanding that the application requires completion of a work history sheet. If I provide my resume, must I also complete the work history sheet?

Yes.

If accepted into your apprenticeship program, do I need to pay tuition?

No, training is provided at no cost, but you must pay for your textbooks/curriculum by the start of every school year.

Do graduates from your electrical apprenticeship program also receive a New Jersey State electrical contractor’s license?

No. A separate test administered by the State of New Jersey is required.

Do graduates from your electrical and telecommunications programs also receive college credits?

Graduates receive college credit recommendations from the American Council on Education (ACE), Washington, DC.
